THEY WERE EXPENDABLE
Inchon, Korea-1950
American & French troops battle Chinese at Chipyong, Korea 1951
34th Infantry Division. Korea-1951
It was early June, 1950.  summer vacation had just begun in Wilmington, Delaware.  Several friends,  Bob Warren, Arnold Levine, Willie Cheseroni, Nick Ruggerio, and Joe Fink, all seventeen years old, were walking down Market Street, and passed the old National Bank building, which had been turned into a Delaware National Guard recruitment office.  Arnie said “hey guys, let’s join the guard.  They all laughed.  Bob said O.K., let’s check it out.  The five friends went into the building, and were immediately greeted by a sergeant,  who had been talking to a major, 35 year old Ben Ludlow.

The boys picked up some pamphlets,  and started to leave.  The major called out, “hey, don’t you men want to learn about the guard?”  The boys liked being called men.  They stopped and listened.  Major Ben “it’s fun.  you can make some money, the meetings are only one weekend a month, and the uniforms will make you popular with the girls.  The guys laughed.  Bob, “what’s the next step?”  Major, “we set up physical exams, we can do that Tuesday, it takes about a half hour, if you pass, we sign you up, swear you in, fit you for uniforms, and you’re in the guard.  That’s all there is to it.  Your first weekend meeting, would be in July, the weekend after the 4th, at the Delaware National Guard Armory on DuPont Street at 9th.

Willie, “Let’s do it.”  The other boys agree, and sign some papers.  The major and sergeant shake hands with them, tell them to go to the Armory for their physical exams on Tuesday at 11:00 AM.  They leave, and go into Eckerd’s drugstore, and sit in the snack area, to have lunch.  They are excited about what they did.

CUT TO: Sunday, June 25th, 1950.  Bob is visiting Arnold.  They are sitting on the porch, listening to the radio.  There is a news break.  The announcer says. “and North Korean troops  have crossed the border and attacked South Korea. President Truman.......” Arnie switched to another station.  Vaughn Monroe was singing “Take me to the moon”

CUT TO: Warren home,  Monday, June 26th, 1950, 3:30AM.  Mr. Warren enters Bob’s bedroom.  “Bobby, Bobby, get up, you have to go to the Armory.”  Bob, sleepily, “what’s going on?”  Mr. Warren, “The Delaware guard has been activated by Truman”  Bob, stunned, “no, no, it must be a mistake” Mr. Warren, “it’s no mistake.”

CUT TO:  Wilmington Municipal Airport, June 27th, 1950. 2:00PM.

Three me are standing by an airplane, clutching papers in their hands.  They are the principals of Wilmington’s high schools.  Wilmington High School, Pierre S. duPont High School, and Howard High School, the city’s black high school.  The papers they are holding, are high school diplomas.  They are graduating all the guardsmen who have been activated, about 30 boys,  in the 11th grade.

CUT TO:  Fort Jackson, South Carolina, July 1st, 1950.  The Delaware National Guard is undergoing an 8 week course of Basic training before being deployed to the Korean war front.

CUT TO:  Korean peninsula, September 15th, 1950.  70,000 men are poised to attack the North Koreans at Inchon harbor.  They are waiting for the massive naval bombardment to end.  The invasion was planned by General MacArthur and is a huge success, literally destroying the North Korean army.  Only the intervention of Communist China, saves North Korea.
